Tencent Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Tencent, has been a trusted ally of McDonald’s China since 2017. This collaboration has enabled McDonald’s China to enhance operational efficiency and lead in digital innovation within the food service sector. By leveraging its expertise in digitalization, Tencent Cloud supports McDonald’s digital and store expansion initiatives, significantly improving the digital ordering system to manage peak times and promotional surges effectively.

With over 40,000 locations worldwide, McDonald’s has established itself as a leading retail food service giant over the past 70 years. Shihong Chen, Chief Information and Experience Officer of McDonald’s China, explains, “Instead of acquiring an external digital system, McDonald’s China opted to create an in-house digital department. However, a skilled cloud computing partner is essential for architecture and technology guidance while aligning with our business needs.”

In an industry where quick ordering and food pickup are paramount, over 90% of transactions at McDonald’s China occur through digital channels. Therefore, it is critical that the digital ordering system can handle both regular peak periods and promotional spikes without incurring excessive costs. David Su, Industry General Manager of Tencent Smart Retail, notes, “Through Tencent Cloud’s capabilities, we collaborate on auto-scaling to reduce costs during low-traffic periods, while ensuring optimal performance during peak times. In challenging network environments, where quality may be compromised, providing quick access to McDonald’s online ordering app and Mini Program is crucial. Additionally, during promotional periods, Tencent Cloud offers extensive support to protect applet data and ensure discounts reach genuine customers rather than being exploited.”

By the end of 2024, McDonald’s China aims to expand from over 6,800 stores to 10,000. Utilizing Tencent Cloud’s big data solutions, McDonald’s China can intelligently assess over a thousand factors for optimal store location selection. Su explains, “For each location, we help determine the viability of site selection and the appropriate store size, format, and operational direction based on anonymized environmental and demographic data. Tencent Cloud is committed to empowering clients through strategic big data utilization.”
